Self High Five!
In what is likely to be the last awesome thing I get to do at CN2 News in Rock Hill, Friday I had the chance to sit in on an interview with the original People’s Champion, Diamond Dallas Page.
DDP made it pretty big in WCW in the late ’90’s and was a big part of why I watched the show on a weekly basis. While not my favorite wrestler of the era, I still loved watching him come out.
DDP stopped by the station to promote his appearance at the NWA Legends convention in Charlotte. In addition, he was also promoting his fitness program, YRG Fitness. The little bit he showed off for the camera was pretty impressive.
In just a matter of seconds, he managed to bring his heart rate from the high 90’s to 140 in a matter of just a couple of minutes by just performing a couple of simple stretches. Stuff anyone can do. It was pretty amazing.
The most impressive part for me was when he bent over in a full scissor with his head nearly touching his feet. It was awesome.
Another impressive thing about DDP, something not physical, is when he pulled out his MacBook Pro, opened it up and started showing us pictures of people that he’s helped through the program. The way he talks about them and gets emotionally invested in those that are working so hard.

In the first image on the left, you can see a disabled veteran that had to have crutches to walk and was extremely overweight.
In the second photo, you can see what he looks like after just 10 months of hard work.
It’s a pretty amazing difference.
The man’s name is Arthur and you can read a lot more about him at DDP’s website, YRG Fitness.

I won’t talk much more about this aspect of the visit. All I want to leave you with is two more photo’s from Page’s laptop.
In the first photo, you can see Arthur’s range of mobility when he began the program and, below that, the photo of his range 10 months in.
It’s not my intention to be an infomercial for YRG fitness so that’s really all I have to say about that.
Again, if you’re interested in any of this, check out DDP’s YRG site at http://www.yrgfitness.com/
I was really surprised how short DDP was. He’s a little taller than me, and I’m about 6′. But the major difference is the guy is just ripped. He looks like he’s made of friggin steel. Not an ounce of fat on his body from the looks of it.
I didn’t really know if it was appropriate to flash the diamond sign going in, but since it’s the symbol he’s using for everything still, he didn’t seem to hesitate at all.
I invited my friend Wes over to the station to sit in, because I knew he was a big fan.
It turns out Wes had the original YRG book, Yoga for Regular Guys.
He dug it out and DDP was happy to sign it, after showing it off to others in attendance talking about how the whole thing got started. Apparently, it’s big selling point was having beautiful women standing next to regular guys. It’s a big selling point for anything.
Wes is writing for The Herald now in Rock Hill, on a blog at least, and wrote two excellent blog posts (here and here) about coming over to see DDP. Check them out if you get a chance.
Finally, in what had to be the most awesome turn of events in the afternoon, after taking the photo above with me and the diamond sign, he stepped in front of me and said ‘I know you want to do this!’ and proceeded to wrap me up in the Diamond Cutter!

He can hit it from anywhere!!!
I tried to act like I was in fear for my life, but I think I was kind of smiling a little bit. Truth be told, I would have paid him to go through with it. I could have joined the long list of awesome that has meet their end with the Diamond Cutter.
Oh, if only reality was as exciting as fiction…
